No.8 Russell Avenue Garage
Gaithersburg, MD
The No. 8 Russell Avenue parking garage is a two-level, above-grade concrete structure that is approximately eighteen years old. The upper parking deck is a Hambro composite floor system, which consists of steel joists embedded in concrete slab reinforced with welded wire mesh, and the lower level of the garage is a slab-on-grade.
SRG was retained to perform a visual examination and condition survey of the garage, as necessary to generate a written summary report as required by the local government. The survey included limited non-destructive testing, limited intrusive sampling, a delamination survey and a spot check crack survey.
SRG's investigation revealed failed welds in the connections of some structural members and SRG immediately initiated an emergency shoring plan to stabilize the structure until a weld remediation program could be undertaken.
Upon completion of the condition survey, SRG was authorized to design a garage rehabilitation plan and provide contract administration, construction observation, and inspection services on this project.
