4707 Connecticut Avenue Garage
Washington, DC

The parking garage consists of a one-level cast-in-place concrete deck constructed of a one-way concrete joist (ribbed slab) system, which incorporated clay-tile fillers used to form the slab supported by concrete beams and columns. Located at the sub-basement level, the parking deck was constructed above a large storage and mechanical room.

SRG was retained to perform an investigation and condition survey, develop a garage rehabilitation program including the replacement of deteriorated concrete slabs, routing and sealing of all existing deck cracks, epoxy injection of certain structural cracks, the application of a waterproof traffic bearing membrane in the garage, and waterproofing the interior of the below grade mechanical room wall.

SRG also performed bidding, contract administration and construction observation services on this project.

During the construction phase, an odor consistent with fuel oil became evident, which appeared to originate from an abandoned underground storage tank. SRG interfaced with the EPA, DC Environmental Health Department, and the tank removal contractor to minimize the impact of the tank removal process on the foundation wall adjacent to the garage.

Our work also revealed voids below the slab-on-grade, leaving the slab unsupported in areas of the garage, which were addressed as part of our work
