Industrial & Manufacturing

When Belgium-based Dhollandia, the world’s largest producer of liftgates for trucks, sought a trusted partner to design its North American headquarters in Gaston County, NC, they engaged Charlotte's Gresham Smith Architects in collaboration with FEG to bring their vision to life. The 315K SF building was designed to house a two-story corporate office space and mezzanine structure totaling 18K SF, plus a production facility with the ability to expand an additional 78K SF in the future, and is Dhollandia’s first in North America. While the spaces are separate, the project design balances efficient manufacturing space with a crisp, modern office area and allows for clear sight lines from the office space into the manufacturing area. The open nature of the entire facility allows daylight to permeate all workspaces. It also features a products showroom and flexible space where classes and events can be held for clients or the community.

This project featured the tilt-up version of FEG's Complete Structural Package™, with the team designing all of the steel framing and the tilt-up panel engineering and shop drawings. The shop drawings included layouts dimensioning all panels, openings, reveals, embeds, and reinforcing schematics. All shop drawings were delivered as part of the Construction Documents and eliminated the wait for the tilt-up subcontractor to submit drawings for review. There were 73 panels with a gross area of ~67K SF, a net area of ~58K SF totaling 1,434 cubic yards of concrete with 3.45 psf of reinforcing, 7,132 linear feet of architectural reveals, and 880 embedded items.
