BALTIMORE, MD – We're thrilled to announce that the Stevenson House has been honored with the 2025 Residential Award at the AIA Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards, a prestigious recognition celebrating residential projects that exemplify creativity, functionality, and community impact. In partnership with PI.KL Studio, Structura helped transform this home into a luminous, art-filled residence, blending modern elegance with sustainable design.
Project scope included transformative renovations to a one-story rancher with a 1,300 SF footprint and full basement, alongside a 500 SF cottage. For the main house, framing changes were engineered to relocate stairs, existing stair openings were infilled, a large first-floor opening was created, and new beams and posts were designed to support the removal of bearing walls. Plans to demolish the existing slab above the garage and reframe it with new wood joists were also provided. The existing cottage foundation was assessed and rehabilitated, with the original structure ultimately demolished down to the foundation top, and a new 500 SF single-story wood-frame cottage with vaulted ceilings was designed. Additionally, a standalone 500 SF wood-framed carport with exterior-rated wood on new shallow footings was engineered, providing partially covered space.
Our team's process began with a site visit and framing survey to document the existing structure, ensuring the retention of serviceable framing where possible. Using conservative assumptions, we designed new framing with dimensional and engineered lumber, seamlessly integrating it with the existing structure without requiring new foundations. The result is a home that balances structural integrity with airy, light-filled spaces and artistic details, enhanced by Form Garden Design’s landscape architecture.
