The 8-story residential building at 2144 California Street NW, constructed in the early 1960s with conventionally reinforced concrete and a composite brick masonry façade, underwent a comprehensive renovation to address significant structural and material deficiencies. Structura, as the Structural Engineer of Record, collaborated with Bonstra | Haresign to restore the building’s integrity and extend its lifespan.

Structura conducted detailed assessments of the masonry façade and below-grade garage, uncovering extensive façade cracking due to missing control joints and deferred maintenance, as well as severe deterioration of the garage’s concrete slabs, joists, beams, and columns. To resolve these issues, Structura developed bid documents specifying the installation of vertical control joints, horizontal soft joints, and repairs to the garage’s structural elements. This renovation restored the building’s structural integrity and functionality, ensuring its continued use as a safe and reliable residential space. Structura’s expertise was key to this successful revitalization effort.
