Sculptures

Located between Capitol Hill and the Nationals Ballpark at M Street SE and 2nd Street SE, Canal Park is a stunning new public park on the site of the historic Washington Canal in the Heart of DC’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. Canal Park transformed an abandoned and contaminated bus parking lot into a sustainable green neighborhood, gathering place and destination for the entire city. The park itself features a LEED Gold-certified pavilion with geothermal heating and cooling, vegetated roof surfaces, water reuse systems and energy/water monitoring dashboard systems as well as electric car charging stations and bicycle parking racks.

Structura was hired by artist David Hess to provide structural support for a variety of his sculptures located throughout the park. A high level of structural design precision was required to stabilize the tall, heavy steel pipes. In addition to the sculpture height, several pieces were skewed and arranged in circular and other off-balance patterns, making precise connections to their foundations critical.
